CBR Review: Nova #33

I recently reviewed Nova #33 for CBR and, in the process, wrote the following sentences: "With Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning almost single handedly (or double handedly in this case, I suppose) writing and defining the current Marvel cosmic line, it’s only natural for the work to suffer a little as the pair get overextended. Nova #33 looks like it could be the first sign in a decline in quality from the writing team, which is almost an accomplishment in itself, going this long before deliver a merely adequate, mediocre comic, but it’s also a sharp disappointment since the standards have been so high for nearly three years."

Chad,

Can you do us a favor and read the book next time!

Kidding, but it was rather clear that they were NOT in Egypt and was stated in last issue as well.

Also, its Richard RIDER, not Ryder.

Can't we get some cosmic love at CBR? ;)

Thanks.

I read your review and, imo, you didn't read the issue that closely.

You stated: "Beginning with the fairly benign concept of the Sphinx sending various time-displaced heroes back in time to 1920s Egypt..."

The issue made it clear that they are not in 1920's Egypt but are in a mystically constructed environment created by the Sphinx and it looks like Egypt because that's the location he wanted.

You also say: "There’s no indication as to why these heroes specifically were selected; even the promise of an explanation is cut short."

Again, the issue says why those heroes were chosen. The old Sphinx picked them because they are the heroes who have defeated him in the past and he believes they have the best chance to defeat the younger Sphinx.

Stinger, the comment regarding Egypt actually came from the recap page, so blame whoever wrote that. I didn't reveal that it wasn't actually 1920s Egypt because that happened later in the book and I was addressing the status quo at the beginning of the issue. I try and limit the actual amount of specific plot details I give away in reviews.

As for the last name misspelling, that's my mistake.

And, last month, I reviewed and thoroughly enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, so there's no bias here.

Doug, the explanation was there and I didn't explain myself clearly enough. The heroes chosen was explained, but not why these specific iterations of the heroes -- or which iterations these were. The mention that these heroes had defeated the Sphinx in the past was glossed over rather quickly.
