I recently reviewed The Unwritten #17 for CBR and, in the process, wrote the following sentences: "The Unwritten #17 is one of the more ambitious comics published by DC this year, as the Vertigo series tries something very interesting: a choose-your-own comic. Basing itself upon the popular Choose Your Own Adventure books (called ‘Pick-a-Story’ here), this issue is told through non-linear storytelling where, at certain spots, the reader can choose between two options and continue from there. To fit all of this possible content into the 32-page comic, the book should read rotated 90 degrees and each page is divided into two, doubling the amount of pages possible. With the first two comic pages taken by introducing the concept, that leaves 60 possible pages of story. While a clever idea that relates well to the concept of The Unwritten, ambition definitely outstrips execution here as the experiment becomes somewhat tedious because of the limitations of the issue needing to fit into the larger, serialized story of the title."
